More platinum problems for SA

Tuesday, 8 July, 2014

More troubled news from SA’s beleaguered platinum industry this week, as we learn that workers ar South Africa's Impala Platinum continue a wildcat strike over wages at its Marula mine.

A Reuters report via Mineweb and numerous other outlets specifies that around 2,000 workers affiliated with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) downed tools at the mine last Friday, demanding higher wages.

This comes on top of a five-month strike in South Africa that only ended last month, which heavily affected Impala (second largest platinum producer in the world), Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin. That one was brought about by NUM's arch rival the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), and didn’t affect Marula operation because the NUM-affiliated workforce there signed a wage deal last year.

But: in light of the wage deal obtained by AMCU at other Impala mines, that agreement is no longer deemed sufficient, and Marula miners now want parity.
